KLASSIC KONVERSATION w/JAY SHEETS OVERVIEW:
When it comes to Restorative Justice (Discipline) in North Texas, one of the first names that come to mind is Kevin Curtis, the founder of Texas Educators for Restorative Practices. However, few people are aware that back in July 2016, Jay Sheets, a Dallas ISD's In-School Suspension Coordinator at the time, would take on an initiative that could potentially change the way Texas schools support students with challenging behaviors. No one can deny that when the second largest school district in the state is doing something and getting results, everyone takes notice.
In August 2015, Dallas ISD was the only North Texas school district to implement Restorative Justice (Discipline). In August 2016, Fort Worth ISD, Arlington ISD and a host of other neighboring North Texas school districts began the process of shifting their practice from punitive to restorative. Jay Sheets, now the Dallas ISD Restorative Discipline Coordinator, is the architect that implemented the plan that brought Restorative Justice (Discipline) to Dallas ISD.
I came know Jay through Kevin. I met him at a Restorative Discipline Summit in February 2016 and we have grown to be friends ever since. I have seen and read all of the news stories and articles about Restorative Justice (Discipline) in Dallas ISD. While I am glad that the media is taking notice, none of the articles have truly captured the groundbreaking work Jay has done.
This Klassic Konversation will provide you with an in-depth look into who Jay Sheets is and how he successfully implemented Restorative Justice (Discipline) in a school district with 225+ schools.
