Restorative Practices in Schools
It's Time For a Change
For quite some time, school discipline has evolved to resemble our criminal justice system. The logic has been to punish students when they misbehave by excluding them from school in an effort to get students to change their behavior. The problem is that exclusion doesn’t work to change behavior and the same students are suspended numerous times, or possibly expelled, which is causing serious long-term harmful consequences to them and to our society. With little to no opportunity for social and emotional learning for these students, they find themselves with limited opportunities when they leave school and often become a burden to our society.
