Alternatives To Suspension

Around the country, educators feel that their hands are tied when it comes to addressing students with challenging behavior in our schools. Schools are challenged daily with students exhibiting behavior that negatively impact the learning environment. In most cases, they are limited to only some type of traditional exclusionary consequence such as in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension. They are assigning traditional consequences but the disruptive behaviors that have an adverse effect on the learning environment continue to persist.

The limitations of traditional consequences leave schools feeling helpless because they only focus on deterring disruptive behavior rather than working to change the behavior. Educators are often finding themselves in a quandary when dealing with adverse behavior in school. With federal and state pushes to reduce and, in some cases, eliminate suspensions, schools are feeling helpless when it comes to ensuring they can maintain a safe and secure learning environment.

By the end of this training, participants will understand:
  • a Discipline Decision-Making Process that helps ensure decision makers are making thoughtful and thorough decisions when addressing students who need to be held accountable for their behavior.
  • a framework for creating Highly Effective Accountability that is designed to change the adverse behavior while maintaining the idea of some traditional consequences.
  • specific Alternatives To Suspension that can be used in place of traditional consequences such as suspension.

Transforming Traditional Consequences Into Meaningful Accountability

It’s unrealistic to completely remove traditional consequences such as in-school suspension and forms of detention from schools. The issue isn’t whether they should exist but rather how to make them effective when they are necessary. When a student’s behavior is jeopardizing the integrity of the learning environment, they sometimes need to be temporarily removed from the learning environment. With that said, removing disruptive students from the learning environment is a short-term and surface level solution that perpetuates deep rooted problems. It temporarily makes us feel comfortable that something was done to address the problem but often leads to further frustration once the students return back to the learning environment.

The reason why many of our disruptive students’ behavior rarely change is because we rarely work to change their behavior. We assume that the punishment alone will change their behavior but the only way to change their behavior is to identify the root causes and actively work on the behavior. This is training is a continuation of the Alternatives To Suspension training. While that training focused primarily on mindset and frameworks, this training delves more into what should be happening when the student is in the consequences.

By the end of this training, participants will understand:
  • how they can shift to focusing on Highly Effective Accountability that is designed to change the adverse behavior while maintaining the idea and framework of traditional consequences
  • how to implement Structured Days, facilitate Circles and create Character Building Projects that work towards changing the behaviors
  • how to incorporate the necessary stakeholders (ie. teacher, parents, community members, etc.) in the school’s community to support your efforts in changing the adverse behavior of some of your students
